Local public authorities’ and French mainland landscape advisers’ perception of landscape in Mayotte Island: The issues of quality of life in a developing region

The European Landscape Convention (ELC) has affirmed and legitimised the role of landscape in quality life people, emphasizing importance both remarkable ordinary landscapes. Therefore, convention should ensure that issues are taken into account everywhere - rich poor regions different cultural contexts especially where term ‘landscape’ does not exist local languages. We choose to study Mayotte, a French Overseas Department off east coast Africa, characterised by particular territorial context with similar those countries Global South. aim our research was reveal how concept is understood defined public authorities their advisers extent which wider framework ELC relevant encourage be effectively land use planning. Semi-structured interviews 14 key stakeholders (local from mainland France) brought light ways understanding ‘landscape’, approaches for including issue management. results show integrating can improve region through adoption tools.
